TSURO Trust has successfully distributed a range of seeds to beneficiaries across the entire Nemakonde landscape as part of its ongoing efforts to bolster food security and agricultural resilience in Chimanimani District.

The seed distribution, which forms part of the Nature + project funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC) through the Canadian Food Grains Bank (CFGB) and the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF), is aimed at preparing local farmers for the upcoming farming season and supporting long-term food and nutrition security.

A total of 7 villages under Chief Mutambara in Ward 7, Chimanimani District, have benefited from the seed distribution. The villages of Nemakonde, Kuretu, Chitombo, Mandima, Mhizha Tagarirwa, and Nezandonyi received a variety of essential seeds including maize, cowpeas, sorghum, and beans.

With the early rains received so far, farmers are already busy planting their crops, with great hope of a better agricultural season.

These crops are vital for both food security and the livelihoods of the community members who rely on agriculture as their primary source of income.

The beneficiaries have been over the monthsโ€™ busy working on the production of bio- fertilisers, which are made from locally available resources.

The villagers were also exposed to mechanised conservation agriculture and that has resulted in increased conservation agriculture hectarage.

Slowly the organization is building seed sovereignty for the community with the major thrust being to create food and nutrition security.

The Nature + project aligns closely with several key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).

The intervention is expected to create avenues for communities to contribute towards sustainable development goals especially that of poverty eradication, through ensuring thriving lives and livelihoods. Zero hunger through ensuring sustainable food security and establishment of a long term food and nutrition security.
