About US

TSURO is authorised to operate across Manicaland Province but currently has a presence in Chimanimani, Chipinge and Buhera Districts focusing on four major areas of intervention, which are Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resources Management (SANRM), Public Environmental Health (PEH), Livelihoods/Economic strengthening (ES) and Community Capacity Development/Organisational Development (OD).

About Us

TSURO Trust

Towards Sustainable Use of Resources Organization, whose acronym is (TSURO Trust) is a Community-based Organization that was formed in the year 2000 to strengthen the capacity of rural communities in Chimanimani District and to empower these rural communities to engage in sustainable and profitable agriculture and proper natural resource management.

TSURO is registered as a Trust under Deeds Registries (Chapter 20:05) of and was founded to support community–level efforts directed at sustainable development.

The Philosophy behind The Chimanimani hare, “TSURO”, was premised on its acknowledged use as an indicator of bio-diversity and health out in the natural world and Tsuro (the hare) became a symbol of wisdom in the face of adversity in human folklore, and thus the people of Chimanimani decided to come up with a homegrown solution to address the challenges within the district.

The organization has its roots within associations of smallholder farmers established in 2000. It uses a bottom-up approach, village-based planning, a multi-stakeholder approach (bringing in key government line ministries or departments, civil society, and community stakeholders), a holistic or multi-sectoral approach (agro-ecological, economic and social interventions), a socially inclusive approach bringing in marginalised members of society (women, those living with disabilities), social mobilisation for collective action (community networks), and use media as a tool for social change.

Our Background

In  2002 TSURO held a conference that was pivotal in its history. The meeting which was held at the Chikukwa Permaculture Centre brought together representatives from several wards of Chimanimani District and launched the TSURO dzeChimanimani Association. The representatives at the conference elected a management committee that was the forerunner of a District Board, which included traditional leadership representation. A number of traditional leaders attended the conference and blessed it with traditional rites.

The 2002 conference gave birth to a vision for the district by delegates in attendance. Delegates urged TSURO to look beyond permaculture/sustainable agriculture practices and to incorporate processing and marketing of agricultural products and issues relating to health and nutrition. A marketing survey done in 2003 saw TSURO adding two more interventions in its operations, viz: Community Health and Community-based Agro-processing and Marketing in 2004  The aforementioned 3 areas of focus have been TSURO’s business for several years and in the year 2020, the Community Health Component was rebranded to Public Environmental Health and the Community-based Agro-processing and Marketing component was rebranded to Economic Strengthening/Livelihoods.

A variety of stakeholders and TSURO representatives participate in strategic planning workshops for the three areas of focus: Sustainable Agriculture and Natural Resource Management, Economic strengthening /livelihoods, Public Environmental Health.
